Aloe barbadensis (vera)
Aloe flower nectar is a favorite of hummingbirds world wide in semi-tropical environments (USA zone 10) and (USA zone 11). The tiny hummers also like to perch on the tips of the aloe leaves, their weight of an ounce or two barely bending the accomodating plant leaves.

Aztec legend says the god of music and poetry took the form of a hummingbird and then descended into the underworld to visit the goddess of love, who then gave birth to the first flower. The .gif motion picture below of a hummingbird sipping from an indian paint brush signifies the belief that hummingbirds as a specie have never lost faith in the Great Mother earth and are therefore able to sustain themselves throughout history in both good times of wetness and in times of drought. See the American Indian Counsel at
Manataka dot org for additional folk lore regarding the hummingbird.
